Black Diamond Distance 8 Review: 314 g Alpine Skyrace Vest

8.5/10
Black Diamond Distance 8 Review: 314 g Alpine Skyrace Vest

Black Diamond claims 314 g for the Distance 8, and Snowleader's scale reads 328 g. Either way, it is one of the lightest 8-liter packs on the market, and above all one of the few that can swallow 1,500 m of elevation gain without bouncing once. S26 update: the redesigned harness with Stitchless Edge Taping changes the game for long-haul comfort. Our verdict, cross-checked against Alpiniste, Snowleader, Hardloop and the manufacturer's spec sheet.

Black Diamond Distance 8: the 8L vest that finally proves the range's mountaineering DNA

The Distance 8 is not a classic trail pack. It is a hybrid vest built for runners who cross over into ridge running, off-trail alpine runs or vertical skyraces. Black Diamond has produced a rare thing here: an 8-liter pack as light as a minimalist race vest, yet armed with Z-Pole Carry and back-mounted hydration bladder compatibility. The S26 version inherits the Stitchless Edge Taping technology already found on the Distance 22, which RunMorph reviewed in May. The result: zero friction points on the shoulders, even in the 6th hour of effort.

RunMorph's advice. If you are torn between the Distance 22 and this 8L, ask yourself one simple question: do your outings last more than 5 hours with the full mandatory gear list? If so, go for the 22. If your outings run 2-4 hours, short and self-supported, with poles and soft flasks, the Distance 8 is the better fit. For 20-50 km skyraces, it is the right choice, full stop.

Who is the Distance 8 for?

The 20 to 60 km skyracer on technical terrain

This is the most obvious target. 8 liters is exactly the volume you need to stash a waterproof jacket like the Salomon Bonatti Trail, a windbreaker, a headlamp, some nutrition, two 500 mL soft flasks and an emergency blanket. Nothing more. Stitchless Edge Taping stops the bounce when you attack a technical descent at 18 km/h. And Z-Pole Carry keeps your hands free through boulder sections.

The mountaineer-runner on fast alpine routes (F to PD+)

The Distance 8 was designed for exactly this profile. Black Diamond says so openly: the Distance range descends directly from the brand's climbing and mountaineering DNA. You set off at dawn for an F+ or PD route in under 5 hours, and you need a pack that holds your compact climbing harness, your accessory cord, your pair of light cams and your helmet strapped to the outside. The Distance 8 does that better than a pure race vest. The double side compression keeps a strapped-on helmet from moving.

The short self-supported runner, 3-5 hours

Short ultra-trails, long runs with plenty of elevation gain, UTMB course recon runs. In this range of use, the Distance 8 shines through its weight-to-capacity ratio. 314 g for 8 L beats most 6 L competitors. If you weigh under 70 kg and run light, it is probably the only pack you will need, from a 1-hour run to a 50 km race.

Comfort, bounce and hold

This is where the S26 update makes all the difference. The redesigned harness extends the shoulder straps all the way to the back panel, which reduces the "pinching" effect of earlier versions. Stitchless Edge Taping replaces conventional seams with a soft heat-welded edge. In practice: in the 4th hour on technical trail, no irritation, no rubbing on the collarbone. The French testers we consulted are unanimous on this point.

Bounce control is stunning for an 8 L pack. The secret: the double side compression and the structured mesh back panel, which press the load against your back. Load the pack to 4 kg, attack a descent at 5 minutes per kilometer, and nothing moves. The limit: beyond 5 kg, the harness loses some hold because there is no hip belt. That is a deliberate choice by Black Diamond, consistent with its skyrace positioning. But be aware: if you often carry more than 5 kg, the Distance 22 will suit you better.

Compartments and accessibility

11 storage spaces spread across the front, sides and back. The accessibility logic is clear:

  • On the run (without stopping): the 2 front soft flasks, the 2 upper stretch pockets (gels), the vertical zip pocket (smartphone up to 16 cm).
  • During a short stop (10 seconds): the 2 side stash pockets, the front Z-Pole Carry to stow or pull out your poles.
  • Long break (gear change): the vertical main compartment (8 L, top access), the internal zip pocket with key clip.

Friction point: the vertical front zip pocket takes some getting used to. The zip sits on the left and opens upward. On a rainy course, water can get in if you forget to close it at the top. Not a deal-breaker, but keep it in mind.

Another thing to know: the soft flask sleeves sit fairly low compared with a Salomon Adv Skin or a Compressport. If you like to drink on the run without touching the flask with your hand, this can be uncomfortable. If you grab the flask by hand to drink (90% of runners), it makes no difference.

Hydration

The Distance 8 comes without soft flasks. That sets it apart from the NNormal Race Vest 5L, which includes 2 Hydrapak 500 mL flasks, or the Ultimate Direction Race Vest 6L, which includes 2 HydraPak Body Bottle 500 mL. So budget an extra €25 to €30 if you are starting from scratch. Not a big deal, but factor it into the overall price.

On the other hand, the pack is compatible with a back-mounted hydration bladder (not included). That gives you 2 setups: soft flasks only for short skyraces, or 2 soft flasks + 1 L in the bladder for long runs or 50 km races. That is rare at this weight and volume. The hose anchor runs through the center of the back panel, clean and without pulling.

How it compares

The Distance 8 faces three distinct packs, depending on your angle:

  • Osprey Duro 6 (220 g, 6 L, €145): lighter, smaller, better ventilated. The better choice if you never go out for more than 3 hours, do not use poles and want bluesign certification. The Distance 8 takes back the edge as soon as you carry technical gear (helmet, climbing harness, compact rain jacket).
  • Ultimate Direction Race Vest 6L (175 g, 6 L, €155): the direct competitor for pure skyracing. 140 g lighter, includes 2 soft flasks. But no Z-Pole Carry compatibility and no mountaineering features. If you only run on trails without poles, the UD takes the edge.
  • NNormal Race Vest 5L (174 g, 5 L, €135): the minimalist vest signed by Kilian Jornet. €15 cheaper, 140 g lighter, includes 2 soft flasks. But only 5 L, no back-mounted bladder compatibility, no front Z-Pole Carry. The NNormal is better for short skyraces (under 30 km), while the Distance 8 takes over as soon as distance or technicality goes up.

The real distinction of the Distance 8: it is the only pack in this comparison that handles fast alpine mountaineering. If that applies to you, the debate ends there.

How to fit it into your RunMorph training plan

The Distance 8 earns its place in 3 types of sessions that a structured RunMorph plan will give you:

  • Long trail run with elevation gain (3 to 5 hours): 2 soft flasks + 1 L bladder + nutrition + rain jacket. The pack disappears, and your focus stays on climbing pace and managing the descents.
  • Course recon (run/hike mode): Z-Pole Carry used to the full. Pull the poles out on the climb, stow them on the descent, all without taking the pack off. Time saved, straight away.
  • Goal race, 30 to 50 km (skyrace or compact trail race): race setup with 2 soft flasks + nutrition + mandatory gear. This is where the low weight of the Distance 8 really shines.

For ultra runners (80 km and up), switch to the Distance 22 or a higher-capacity pack such as the Raidlight Ultralight 12L. The Distance 8 lacks the volume to carry the full mandatory gear for UTMB or the Diagonale des Fous.

The RunMorph Coach's verdict

Score 8.5/10.

The Distance 8 fills a niche nobody had covered this coherently: an 8 L vest that embraces its mountaineering DNA without giving up race-vest weight. Black Diamond upgraded the harness on the S26 version, and that is what takes it from a good pack to a very good one. At €149.90, value for money is fair without being unbeatable. The 1.5 points we deduct come from the missing soft flasks (a questionable commercial call at this price) and the 5 kg payload limit (consistent with its positioning, but worth flagging).

Who would score it 9.5/10? The skyracer who runs short self-supported outings with poles on technical alpine terrain and already owns favorite soft flasks. For that profile, it is probably the best 8 L pack available in 2026.

Key takeaways for your training

  • 314 g claimed / 328 g weighed in France: one of the lightest 8 L packs on the 2026 market, with the Stitchless Edge Taping harness from the S26 update.
  • 8 L, well organized: 11 storage spaces, fast access on the run thanks to the front soft flasks and stretch pockets.
  • Integrated Z-Pole Carry: the only pack in its weight class with a front pole system designed for run-hike transitions on climbs.
  • Hydration bladder compatibility: switch from race setup (2 soft flasks) to long-run setup (2 soft flasks + 1 L bladder) without changing packs.
  • 5 kg payload limit: no hip belt, so move up to the Distance 22 or a pack with a hip belt if you regularly carry more than 5 kg.
